Some screen printers and embroiderers find success through wild innovations, unusual business models, a hot niche, or good luck. For the most part, however, success in the decorated apparel industry is really about following the fundamentals: start small, don’t overspend, carve out a diverse customer base, and grow relatively slowly but steadily. That has been the model for Mike Hertz, whose 8-year-old shop, Designs of All Kinds, Vancouver, Wash., has made a sure and steady climb toward annual sales of $500,000.
